The power of water

Water is life, water is power. The handling of and respect for water are as old as humanity itself. People have always attached tremendous importance to water and treated it with immense respect.

But water is not only vital for humans, animals and plants – in many religions and cultures it is symbolic for spiritual life and also for physical and mental fertility. In the Germanic religions, for example, water sources were considered sacred places. In India, water is often described as the origin of all existence. Springs, rivers, lakes and seas have been praised in many religions and cultures as deities or as homes of deities. This is why the Greeks worshipped the sea god Poseidon, as well as several river gods and water nymphs, often singing about them in their poetry.  Besides its healing and life-giving effect, the awesome power of the water is also something to be feared. The flood was feared as a punishment from God. In the cultures of ancient Mexico and India legends of primeval flood disasters play an important role. The handling of and respect for water has influenced many cultures.

Even now water still plays a prominent role in our lives. Every day we have to ensure the correct water balance in our body so that we can stay energised and refreshed.
